So far authorities in Victoria have found over 170 bodies after the weekend bushfires. It is thought the death toll will rise over 200. This has been the most damaging fire in Australian history and the most devastating loss of life in peacetime.
As I have read through the stories of survivors and accounts of those who perished, it has struck me just how fragile and vulnerable we are. Our lives can seem so robust, full of promise. We plan and hope and dream and yet in a matter of moments our lives can be over.
There is a Colin Buchanan song that we sing at church called "Be Strong and Courageous". It's a great song about perseverence through suffering and testing. One of the lines that I glibly sing without really considering it is:
"Do not fear the fire... Jesus has conquered it all."
I have never really had to fear fire. There have been a few times when we have been down or up the coast and we have been cut off due to bushfires but I have never had to flee for my life nor risk losing it. I don't imagine I would be very brave in such circumstances...
And of course as with all tragedies that assail humanity, the question is asked and should be asked and must be asked - Where is God in all this? He is there among it.
